Spreaker:

Carol Cremin, MSc, Canadian Certified Genetic Counsellor, BC Cancer Hereditary Cancer Program

Session Overview:

BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in women and men are known to increase risks for breast and ovarian cancers, but they can also significantly raise the risk of pancreatic and may factor into some other gastrointestinal cancers. Carol Cremin, Genetic Counsellor with the BC Cancer Hereditary Cancer Program, will join us to discuss screening and management options tailored for BRCA+ individuals in British Columbia, including accessing and navigating care for those who qualify.

Key Topics:

  • Pancreatic Cancer and BRCA Mutations: Overview of the increased risk and what recent research reveals about BRCA’s role in pancreatic cancer development.

  • Screening Recommendations: Current screening options for BRCA+ individuals, including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and MRI-based protocols, along with who should be screened based on family history and genetic predisposition.

  • Risk Management: Lifestyle interventions that may reduce pancreatic cancer risk, including smoking cessation and diabetes control and signs and symptoms to be aware of.

  • Treatment Options: Updates on emerging treatments such as PARP inhibitors, which have shown promise in treating BRCA-related cancers.

  • Overview of BC Care System: A brief explanation of the pancreatic cancer landscape in British Columbia and available care for those who qualify for screening.

  • Q&A: An opportunity to ask questions and receive expert advice.

This session will provide an evidence-based approach to managing the elevated cancer risks for BRCA+ individuals, with a focus on early detection and prevention strategies. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A portion.
